[00:00:00] I was talking to someone who wants to start a personal chef business, but they had a long list of things that were keeping them from actually getting started. Now, when you really think about it logically, if you want to get paid to cook, really all you have to do is tell someone, I will cook this for you if you pay me this.
Now, in reality, yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know that’s not a good sales pitch. That’s not going to get you a successful business, but if technically that is really all you have to do to get paid to cook, what is the difference between a Polly who goes pro, who does what they need to do to start their personal chef business and get paid to cook, and a Alan, who’s always an amateur, he never gets started for a lot of reasons or stays in planning mode or someday I’ll get started [00:01:00] forever and never get started.
Today, I’m going to tell you stories about things I’ve heard from real people so that you can see for yourself where they are and why. And I’m going to give you tips on what to do if you are stuck in the same place. Hey there, Chef Shelly here. I help passionate cooks who want to get paid to do what you love start a personal chef business on your own terms, cooking when you want, whether you want to do weekly meal prep services or small catering.
If that’s something you’re interested in, you can go to that link below and get my free guide on how to do weekly meal prep services for clients. So back to these real examples, right? I talked to someone who is in their late 40s and they said they couldn’t start a personal chef business because they’re too old and no one will hire them.
Now think about that and see this is why this is so fun. It’s so much easier to do when you’re thinking about someone else’s problem [00:02:00] instead of what’s stopping us, right? So is that a fact? Do people who are in their late 40s not get hired? Is there like something that actually keeps people of a certain age from starting personal chef businesses?
Of course not, right? But that’s easy for you and I to see now because we’re not in it, right? So inside the Personal Chef Business Academy, there’s everybody from teenagers in high school to retirees in their 60s. So I’m telling you now, there’s not an age thing, right? I talked to someone else who said they can’t start their personal chef business right now because they don’t have enough money.
They can’t afford it and they, I’ve even heard from people, they need to get a loan. Okay, let’s go to facts. If you’re cooking for yourself, you probably have pots and pans, right? And if you could just say to someone, [00:03:00] I’ll cook this for you if you pay me this and you can do it, is it actually a fact? It’s not.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Of course, long term, you want to have good equipment. You want to have all the things you need. You want to set up a business entity, get insurance, get the things for your business. There are things that will legitimately cost money. Yes, yes, yes. And if you want to get real specifics about how much it costs or really doesn’t cost to start a personal chef business, you can watch this video right here.
And I’ll drop the link in the description too. And it’s how much does it cost to start a personal chef business? Cause you don’t need to take out a loan. But that being said, if that’s what holding you back to really think about telling someone if they pay you X to cook Y, then what are the excuses that would [00:04:00] come up?
why you wouldn’t be able to do that. And then look at those and see what’s underneath those. So, here’s a good one that I heard last week. Now’s not the right time. It’s summer. People aren’t hiring for weekly meal prep services. Or, I’ve also heard, it’s the holidays. That’s not a good time to start. Or, even, you know, I need to X, Y, Z.
Then I can get started. Now again, You can X, Y, Z. Absolutely have reasons that now is not the right time to start a business. And that is a choice that you need to make to not get started right now. Right? Maybe you’re moving or having a baby or finishing school or whatever. But when someone tells me something like, well, it’s summer and people don’t hire now, uh, it’ll be better if I start in January because that’s when all the people really get started.[00:05:00] Those aren’t backs. Why do we do this, right? So what is it? What are these things in our head that don’t make logical sense? but that are keeping us from doing what we really want to do. These are thoughts that are holding us back and that’s also known as a limiting belief. And a limiting belief is just a term for that little voice in our head telling us that we can’t.
We can’t because we don’t have this. We can’t because we’re not that. We can’t because of where we are, right? Well, once you start identifying these thoughts and seeing that they’re actually just thoughts, not facts, don’t get me wrong, that’s not going to make you feel any better, right? It’s not going to make it work better.
We have these thoughts because at the end of the day, we don’t want to take a risk. We [00:06:00] don’t want to try new things. It can be scary. We’re afraid of failing. We’re afraid of putting ourselves out there. We’re afraid of being rejected. We’re afraid of being judged. And so just identifying those thoughts.
It’s not about stopping them. It’s not about being fake positive, pretending they’re not there, pretending you don’t feel scared. It’s not about that at all. It takes work and it takes time to change your thoughts and your beliefs about that stuff. Especially if we’ve had them for a long amount of time.
But what we can do easily is not to give into it. Not to listen to it. So once you recognize the thoughts as being, Oh, Hey, that’s really stopping me from doing what I want to do. That takes some of the power away from it and can help you move on anyway. So let me give [00:07:00] you an example of what this really looks like.
Number one first is even noticing that you’re having that crappy little voice and that it is limiting you. It is. Stopping you from doing what you want to do. If there’s something you want, like starting a personal chef businesses and you have thoughts about why you can’t do it, write it down and look at it and think about, Hey, that’s just a thought, or that is a fact right now, or, you know, what is that voice telling me?
And look under that and see, is it really coming from fear or is it really coming from, you’re making a conscious choice because of. what’s going on. Of course, it can be scary to try something new, right? But identifying the thoughts makes it a little easier to take that emotion out of it and make an informed decision.
Number two is look at the other side of it. [00:08:00] So you have this voice in your head, right? You have this thought saying some things to you. But what’s something else you can think? What is another belief that you have? You don’t have to say the thought’s wrong. You don’t have to change it. Whatever. You just let it be there.
But what is something else that’s true? Have you ever done something new? Have you ever learned something new? Have you ever succeeded in anything ever in your whole entire life? Of course we have, right? No matter how small, if you can think about something like that, find some evidence for yourself.
Sometimes we have to dig pretty deep, because of course our minds go to the negative, right? But Think about something that actually supports what you want to do instead of just listening and giving air time to the ones that are stopping you. A great way to support yourself with this is number three, have some accountability.
Because [00:09:00] at the end of the day, we’re all human beings, right? And as much as we want to do some things, um, It can be just easier to have a little accountability to someone else instead of just ourselves, right? It’s easier to go to the gym if you have a workout partner. It’s easier to get the house clean if someone’s doing it with you.
So if you have someone that you know, like, and trust that’s trying to start a business too, it can be great to have conversations with them. Or even if there’s just someone you like that you can Tell what you’re planning on doing this week so that you’ll know that you’re going to check in with them.
They’re going to ask about it, you know, set up kind of a little accountability with them. You know, maybe you’ve done that before with weight loss. Again, it’s just a lot easier if you’re sometimes you’re accountable to someone else. This is one of the most valuable things we have in the Personalship Business Academy.
There’s a whole group of people working on the exact [00:10:00] same goal, even though specifically it might be different for each person how they’re doing their business. But you get that accountability. You have accountability to other people in the group. We have monthly calls where we all talk together. They have one on one calls with me.
There’s a whole support system that helps keep you accountable and helps you. Have other voices in your head instead of just the negative ones that are just trying to keep you safe, but keeps you stuck with that little voice. So if you want to start a personal chef business, but you have a reason that you can’t, or you’ve been starting for a really long time, or maybe you’re going to start a personal chef business at some distant point in the future, again, Identify the thought that’s making you do that.
Look at it and see, huh, is that actually a fact for me right now? [00:11:00] Or is that just a thought and it’s a crappy thought that’s keeping me from doing something I want to do and decide if you want to focus on thoughts that will actually support you and help you get started now. Again, if you haven’t gotten started because of something like you don’t know how to do meal prep services for a paying client, that’s a fact right there and you can go in the description, get my free guide on how to do weekly meal services for paying clients.
Again, that’s just something you need to learn and you can totally do that. So if you’ve been telling yourself you don’t know how, or you can’t, that’s an easy thing that you can tell yourself. I don’t know how, but I can learn how and take that step. You’re going to just have to take the fear with you, right?
It’s going to be there, but at least give 50 percent equal airtime to thoughts that are going to support what you want to do. Because I’m telling you the [00:12:00] clients are out there and they are hungry for what you’re cooking.
